Wood Shakes
Shakes are cracks in timber.

In addition shingles and shakes are prone to rot splinter crack and cup. Medium shakes are shakes that measure nominal 12 in. The shingles are sawn usually giving them taper from end to end and therefore using less wood than a shake.
