Apart from the utility aspect of a woodworking finish there is the aesthetic angle as well.

Water-heavy finishes will sometimes swell wood fibers unevenly. You can enhance the appearance of wood by applying a finish to it on completion of a project. Fold a piece of 400 or finer sandpaper into a small square.

Apply a small amount of lemon oil mineral oil or baby oil to the dried surface as a lubricant. Wood finishes are relatively easy to apply but not always so easy to remove. Commonly used wood finishes include wax shellac drying oils such a linseed oil or tung oil lacquer or paint.

Sand the oily surface applying light pressure with only your fingertips in the direction of the woods grain. If you get a glossy finish your wood will have more of a sheen or glow than a finish with less gloss. The wood may also swell so that doors windows and drawers become challenging to operate.
