Types Of Wood Grain Patterns

The two basic categories of grain are straight and cross grain.

Types of wood grain patterns. There are three different types of wood grains depending on the way to cut and slice the wood. Both species are light brown in color although red oak usually has hints of red and both have visible growth rings and straight grains. There are three basic types of wood grains produced by different methods of sawing wood.

Spiral grain or diagonal grain. Hardwood species are not always necessarily stronger than softwoods but many species are well known for their beautiful and distinct wood grain patterns. Some woods like mahogany develop a predictable spiral growth cycle where subsequent cycles are uniform.

Spiral growth erratic growth and tension within the growing tree create these beautiful grain and figure patterns. Perhaps the most important physical aspect of wood grain in woodworking is the grain direction or slope eg. Woodworkers though say fine-grained and coarse-grained rather than use the word texture to describe this characteristic of wood.

The flat surface of the board. We stock about 80 different wood species therefore we can make about 150 different. There are also some woods which are considered to be hardwoods that are not deciduous trees such as Bamboo and Palm.

Flat grainF straight grainS and curly grainC. This pattern is most clearly seen in flatsawn sections of wood. Therefore even within a same wood species the grain types will vary depending on how it is cut and sliced.
