Painting Stained Wood
Paint the wood with primer.
Painting stained wood. Most stained wood has been coated in a glossy polyurethane or varnish. Whether youre hoping to make your home look more modern or give it a rustic feel paint can be an easy and effective tool for changing up your style. The keys to painting over stained wood doors are attention to detail meticulous preparation and quality tools and materials.
Apply it evenly across both sides and around all edges using a good quality brush. With your stain sealing primer applied and flatted down the final job is to then apply your top coat paint. Give everything a good surface cleaning.
Sanding will get messy. If you fail to do any of these then tiny debris or dust might mix with your paint. There is really no painted surface that cannot be re-painted so long as the painter remembers three essentials.
Use a clean 6 in 15 cm foam roller to cover larger flatter surfaces. Top Coat You can use a top coat of polyurethane over your painted wood if you wish however it is unnecessary if you use a high quality paint. If you arent using Oil Bond products you wont be able to paint over these glossy surfaces directly because the paint cant properly grip the surface.
Even wood that has been stained a dark color can be painted over using the proper tools and techniques. If you have a wood stain stripper you can use that as well. Once sanded stained wood trim accepts new layers of paint easily.
You may need 2 coats of paint to get the coverage you desire. Paint in the direction of the wood grain. Remove any nails and fill in any holes with spackling to create a smooth even surface on which to paint.
