How to paint wood paneling with grooves. Personally I like to fill the knots but not the grooves. When painting for wood paneling choose either a stain-blocking latex primer or an oil-based primer. With the help of a scraper scoop some of the drywall mud paste and let the spackle of the grooves begin.
Apply a thin coat of your paint to all paneling surfaces. Allow the primer to dry a full 24 hours before painting over it. Use a brush to fill in any grooves.
Remove any excess paint that collects in the panel grooves using your brush. Between prep Prime and paint it this is a project that can easily be done in a day for your average sized room 10x20. Most of my house has wood paneling instead of drywall.
To fill the grooves get Drywall Joint Compound and apply to the grooves with a 6-inch drywall knife. Move your hand downward top to bottom and keep it up until you fill all the grooves evenly. Take care of any drips right away too.
Its important to use the setting-type of compound as it shrinks less and dries faster. When the paneling is dry apply drywall mesh tape over the groove. You can add more later on if needed.
Fill in the groove using the putty knife and drywall compound. To paint wood paneling start by filling in the grooves with joint compound if you dont want them to be visible. Filling the grooves is a lot of work and these grooves can crack in time if your wood panels move or shift.
