Blue Wood Aster
Blue wood asters have been planted at Mustila where they thrive in the shade of the Rock Sugar Maples Acer saccharum south of the Festival Area.
Blue wood aster. Found in dry to moist well drained deciduous woodlands and woodland borders and sunny to. Bushy with small blue-to-white flowers. The large heart-shaped leaves effectively cover the ground and in late summer blue.
The Blue Wood Aster disc are yellow and fade to red. Pale blue to violet flowers bloom in large loose panicles. Unlike Drummonds Aster the Blue Wood Aster has stems and leaf undersides that are hairless or they have lines of hair.
The Blue Wood Aster can be distinguished from both Arrow-Leaved Aster and Drummonds Aster by its narrow petioles. Blue wood aster flowers later than White Wood Aster and sometimes flowers into November. A low-growing ground cover similar to creeping phlox with small white flowers.

This plant has no children Legal Status. The petioles of the latter two species are conspicuously winged with narrow green margins. Aster cordifolius is drought tolerant and somewhat unpalatable to deer and rabbits.
